• Sleeping FAQ: 8-12 Weeks – Lunchtime nap

Should I start sleep training or walking my 8-week-old son for his lunchtime nap? I suffer from an immune disorder which makes me very weak physically; having a second child was a bit of a risk really. I have also just been diagnosed with PND. We have been trying the routine but are having such problems with the lunch-time nap as our 8-week-old wakes after 45 minutes. Our first child, was a “catnapper” and very unhappy as a baby; I am desperate for this not to be the case for our new baby. I have been reading the advice on the website and in the book but am at a…

How can I get my 9-week-old daughter to sleep better at lunchtime? I have been having the ever popular problem of the lunchtime nap. At 9 weeks old my daughter hasn’t had the full sleep now for 2 weeks and is becoming a very unhappy baby as a result. For the first week I kept her in her cot, pitch black, well tucked in but every day she woke after 45 minutes. I tried giving her a top up before going down but wasn’t interested. I then tried giving the 11am feed at 10.15 but still not interested so I don’t think her waking is a due to hunger. For…

  • Sleeping FAQ: 8-12 Weeks – Lunchtime nap

Despite trying your advice for a week, my 10 week daughter still only sleeps for 45 minutes I wrote to you last week about my lunchtime nap problem and many thanks for your reply. I have been trying what you suggested but unfortunately without success. I have tried leaving my daughter for 10-20 minutes, sometimes 30, but she cries and cries. This last week after 45 minutes I have gone to her immediately before she fully wakes up. I know that she will not settle in her cot, so I pick her up and hold her in the dark. She will go back to sleep almost straight away, but when…

  • Sleeping FAQ: 8-12 Weeks – Lunchtime nap

My 9.5-week-old daughter’s lunchtime nap is now disturbed by nursery runs Since my 3-year-old son has been back at nursery, the midday nap for my daughter has gone wrong. He has to be collected at 12.30 so I have to leave at 12.15. My daughter is tired at 12.00 so I put her to sleep in her car seat ready to put in the car. She sleeps fine until I take her out of the car at 12.30 to collect my son. I have tried putting the car seat in the buggy and just carrying it but she always wakes up and will not go back to sleep. I know…

How do I adjust the routines to fit a newborn of 10 days in with two school age children? I have 2 older boys aged 7 and 4.5. I have a couple of problems: firstly the morning school run which coincides with nap time. At the moment Dad is doing this, as he is a lecturer and works fairly flexibly, but in 2 weeks he will be teaching for a week and leaving early. How do I sort out a morning nap when I am leaving home at 8.30 (by car then a walk) for school, then onto nursery? Its lots of short car rides and walks; I don’t want…

My 7 week old is very hard to wake and feed properly at 10pm My 7-week-old daughter is still fed with a split feed at 5pm and 6.15pm and then sleeps from 6.30pm until we wake her at 10.30pm. This is a major challenge, she absolutely does not wake up naturally and is often extremely difficult to wake up (this sometimes taking 30-40 minutes); she then eventually feeds well and sleeps until 4-4.30am although she sometimes wakes at 2.30am and cries for 15 minutes. She does not seem ready to go to one feed at 6pm, as when we get back from her little walk at 5pm she is immediately…

My two week old daughter seems to have her days and nights completely reversed My two week old daughter seems to have day and night the wrong way round. She sleeps all day – I have to wake her for feeds and take her clothes off/change nappy etc. halfway as she falls asleep after 10-15mins. She sleeps in between the feeds. Then she ‘wakes up” from about 8.30pm and goes on a feeding marathon until around 3/4am when she will finally fall asleep in her moses basket. How can I switch this pattern around? I have a 2 year old too and have to be up with him at 7am,…

Is there any way we can help our 5 week daughter from startling awake at her lunchtime nap? Our daughter was born by “C” Section as she was breech with arms raised above her head. Within 4 days she was wiggling out of her full swaddle and only sleeping with her arms above her head. She continues to do this, and hates being fully swaddled, refusing to rest until her arms are free. Now we half swaddle her. However the problem is that she has a very strong Moro Reflex, triggered by just about anything from a sigh, hiccup, and a floorboard creak or sometimes nothing perceptible at all. This…

  • Sleeping FAQ: 0-8 weeks – Daytime Sleep

I have just begun to use the routines with my 7 week old son who is bottle fed. Is it possible to keep to different sleep times providing we don’t keep him up longer than 2hours? I have looked at your book after being recommended it by a friend. Lots of it seems to be for breast fed babies and I would very much like you to give me a routine for bottle fed. My son is quite a big baby and has always fed well. I stopped breast feeding mainly because he was feeding every hour or so and I felt drained, and it wasn’t exactly as I expected.…

  • Sleeping FAQ: 0-8 weeks – Daytime Sleep

My 5 week son is very sleepy through out the day but unsettled in the evenings My son is a very sleepy baby; he is 5 weeks old and around 11lb. We start the day at 7am with a 5oz feed he then falls asleep at around 8am to 8.15am and will sleep to 10am. He is then top and tailed and fed 4 oz at around 10.30am (if he makes it until then, sometimes it is nearer 10am). He then falls asleep virtually straight away and sleeps until 2 – 2.30pm when he wakes and has 4 oz. He has a short awake time then wants to go to…
