• Feeding FAQ: 6-9 months – Breast Feeding

I’d like my eight-month-old to stop breastfeeding Katie is eight months old and I have been using the routines since she was born. I am still breastfeeding but am going away for six days at the end of March. She has been breastfed exclusively and but she did take the bottle while we were feeding her at 10pm with expressed milk, although that stopped when she was 15 weeks old. I have a month to wean her off my boob. Can you please advise on the best way to go about it? I’m not sure whether to go straight on to a cup or beaker rather than a bottle, and…

I am having real problems getting my 8.5mth old son to drink formula from a cup My son sleeps and eats very well, following Gina’s routines to the letter. He has recently started refusing his 2.30pm bottle, (which is the only bottle he has) this feed I dropped two weeks ago. He has a breastfeed in the morning and then again at night. It’s the morning breastfeed I want to drop but he will not take formula from a cup. My son drinks juice and water from a cup and has done for the last 4mths. I have tried lots of different cups but always met with the same response,…

How can we get our 8.5mth old son to drink from a bottle? I’m not sure if my 8 1/2 month old gets enough milk at the 10.00pm feed. We would like my husband to give him some formula from a bottle but every bottle we have tried has been unsuccessful and he won’t take hardly any. It’s not too bad if we take the lid off and let him drink straight from the bottle but even then it’s still only about 2oz. He presently is fully breast fed taking 5-10mins at each feed throughout the day and night. He feeds at 7am, 10am, 2pm, 6.30pm, 10.30pm, 2am and 4am.…

My 6.5mth daughter still wakes several times in the night. Are her wakings habit rather than hunger? I wrote to you about a month ago and thank you for your advice, especially as it was just before Christmas. I have implemented everything you suggested but my daughter is still waking several times a night. Some days she eats her solids really well, other days she has almost nothing. In the last month she has gained 3 oz each week which is quite good for her. Are her night wakings habit rather than hunger now? I am trying to do the ‘core night’ and have got Gina’s sleep book, but several…

Question – Do breast-fed babies need extra vitamin D? My eight–month–old daughter is still breast–feeding, and I have heard that babies can get low in vitamin D. Why is this is a problem for breast–fed babies but not those on formula? What should I do about it? Answer: That is a really important question. There is growing concern among experts about low vitamin D levels in young children in Western countries, but little information has filtered down to mothers. It is particularly common in some ethnic groups with darker skin, in babies who are exclusively breast–fed without taking vitamin supplements, and in breast–fed babies whose mothers did not take vitamin…

  • Feeding FAQ: 6-9 months – Commercial Baby Food

Question – What to look for in a commercial baby food? I have not given my son commercial food yet and I am thinking about plane travel. I know you can take packets of food with you on board, but not any home cooked meals, so want to get him used to some commercial food at home before I try him with it on an outing. I am sure lots of mums use these meals, when travelling or out. Answer: While many mums are concerned about using commercial baby food, for time–pressed parents or those who are out and about, they can be a godsend. While my recommendation is that…

Question – Worried about E numbers? So many products I look at for my baby contain E numbers, which always worries me. Do I need to be scared of all of them? Answer: Many people are suspicious of E–numbers, which are codes in ingredient lists for food additives. The mention of food additives or E–numbers often raises concerns that they are artificial and potentially dangerous substances. However, the terms E–numbers and food additives cover a wide range of substances; all of them are added in small amounts to carry out a specific function, for example to preserve, colour or thicken a food. One factor that often puts people off all…

Can I pass my allergies on to my baby of 18 weeks? During my pregnancy I developed an allergy to peaches and apples (I’m not sure whether this is normal or not!!). My doctor told me that the allergy should disappear when I gave birth – but it hasn’t. When I eat apple, my mouth feels all tingly and my lips swell a bit. I am extremely worried that I might have passed this allergy on to my daughter, who is now 18 weeks old and I’m thinking of weaning her soon. Am I likely to I have passed the allergy on? Should I avoid apple altogether for a while?…

  • Feeding FAQ: 4-6 months – Other

Is it too late to begin the routine at 4 months? My main problem is that I haven’t been following the Contented Baby routine so far. I breast fed my baby exclusively (on demand) for the first 7 weeks, when I started to give him a bottle at 7pm to go to bed with; then I breast fed him on waking through the night. He no longer seemed to be satisfied by breast milk alone, so I gradually moved over to bottles from about 3 months old. I still breast feed him if he wakes in the night or at the first feed of the day (7 am), depending on…

Why does my 5 month baby sometimes appear to have a fit when feeding? On several occasions, when feeding my baby (both on the bottle and the breast) he has begun to shake his head up and down, like he is having a fit or a convulsion. He does not blank out, or even stop feeding, and the convulsion only lasts several seconds. On one occasion, he had just finished feeding and his jaw started to shake up and down in the same way his head had on previous occasions. I mentioned the behaviour to my health visitor, who told me to see my doctor. The doctor was, however, dismissive…
