Development FAQ: 12-18 months – Behaviour
My daughter of 15mths has little speech but one word she uses constantly is “no”. She will say this when either asked to do something, or told to stop doing something. At first it seemed quite amusing but now I feel as if every day is battle of wills from the moment she gets up. How can I get her to have a more positive response to things? Or is this just a phase? This is just one of the many different phases of your child’s normal development. She has now reached the age where she is beginning to assert herself emotionally, physically and verbally and is gradually learning the…

Development FAQ: 12-18 months – Behaviour
I have a very boisterous 15-month-old girl and she is quite strong willed! How do you approach discipline at this age? For instance when we go to toddlers’ group she just runs in and pulls everything off the shelves; each time I ask her to stop she just runs to something else. She doesn’t seem to be able to concentrate on anything for any period of time. At 15 months old your daughter’s concentration skills are just beginning to form as well as her social skills. Remember for her everything is new and just needs to be explored and she does need time to do this, however, quite rightly, you…

Development FAQ: 12-18 months – Behaviour
My daughter Harriet is 13-months-old and sometimes gets really scared of other people – not only strangers, but sometimes friends of mine whom she has met several times before. She looks at them fearfully and bursts into tears. Today we went to a singing group for the fourth time. The first two times were OK but the next two occasions we had to leave after ten minutes because she just wouldn’t stop crying and it was rather embarrassing. Once a week she stays for a couple of hours with a friend who has a son the same age. She has been going there for two months and she still becomes…

Development FAQ: 12-18 months – Learning
My 15mth son has begun to clamp his mouth shut when it is time to brush his teeth. I am beginning to dread getting my son ready for bed as he just refuses to have his teeth brushed. He will open his mouth for me and then clamps tightly shut onto the brush and wont let me do a thing. He thinks it is hilarious and shakes his head from side to side with a big grin on his face. When he first began to do this I did laugh with him but now I am not sure how to get him to stop this each and every evening. I…

Development FAQ: 6-12 months – Other Advice
How do we manage to stay with relatives with our 11-month-old daughter? In July, when Jessie will be 11 months we have been to asked to stay with my husbands aunt and uncle. They have never had children so I am very apprehensive about how we will manage with a crawler in their house. The house is quite large and is full of antiques, both furniture and china. Many of the floors are flag stoned with rugs over them, the stairs are steep and twisty. In all, it is not really a child-friendly environment. What could I take with me to help me “child proof ” it a little and…

How do I adjust the routines to help my 8mth son adapt to his new nursery? My son is due to start nursery in 2 weeks time and I would appreciate your advice on how I adapt his routine to fit in with the 3 days he will go to nursery. I am going to get him used to nursery over a 6 week period before I go back to work by leaving him gradually more and more. My concerns however are around how he will eat and sleep there. He has been an amazing ‘contented baby’ and fitted in with the routines from 5 weeks old and at 4…

Development FAQ: 6-12 months – Other Advice
Have you any advice for potty training when using cloth nappies? My daughter has been on Gina’s routines since birth – they have worked brilliantly – thank you. Although she is only 8-months-old, I have a copy of Gina’s potty training book and have glanced through it. Does Gina have any special advice to give to someone, like myself, who uses cloth nappies as opposed to disposables? The only difference that you might notice is your daughter’s awareness of being wet and dirty. With cloth nappies this may start earlier, especially with wet ones; than with a toddler in disposables which draw the moisture away from the skin. Although your…

Development FAQ: 6-12 months – Other Advice
My little boy, Ben, who is eight months old, has several teeth, which I try to clean in the morning and the evening. Sometimes he is very co-operative but on other occasions he clamps his mouth shut and won’t let me clean them. Do you have any tips on the best way to clean your child’s teeth and what to do if they are not to keen on the idea? Ben’s response is perfectly naturally. He is at an age when he is beginning to want to try to do things himself. I suspect he probably wants to feed himself too? These first indications of independence are a very healthy…

Development FAQ: 6-12 months – Behaviour
How do I get my 10mth old son to stop screaming? It is affecting our whole life My son has always been a very happy and easy baby. However, there is one major problem that has caused endless tension and countless arguments between my husband and me. Basically, he likes to scream (a very high pitched horror film style scream). He seems to do it when he is excited, tired, hungry, dirty, bored, frustrated or in need of attention. It started when he was about 4 1/2 mths old and I was adamant it was just a phase that he would soon grow out of. I have always been able…

Development FAQ: 6-12 months – Behaviour
At 11mths my daughter is able to use spouted beakers for both milk and water. Lately she has started to drop or throw her cup after taking a small amount at milk feeds having previously taken these well. How do I deal with this behaviour? We introduced beakers to my daughter, who is now 11mths following the guidelines. She took to them well, and is now only having a bottle once a day at bedtime. She uses non-spill Tommee Tippee cups both with and without handles. She has always been inclined to drop her water beaker at mealtimes, and recently she has also started to drop her cup whilst it…
